Considerate la vostra semenza:
fatti non foste a viver come bruti,
ma per seguir virtute e canoscenza.
Consider well your seed:
You were not born to live as a mere brute does,
But for the pursuit of knowledge and the good.
— Dante Alighieri · Inferno XXVI 1

1 Spoken by Ulysses (Odysseus) in the poem. Dante himself condemns this act: Ulysses misuses rhetoric and intellect to push beyond the boundaries set for human beings, ultimately leading to the death of his crew. Hence, Dante places Ulysses among the false counsellors in the Eighth Circle of Hell. This quote is a reminder that intellectual ambition should be valued, but guided by restraint.
